Bukhari is a charitable cultural initiative that explores the spiritual and intellectual legacy of Imam Al-Bukhari, one of the most influential scholars in Islamic history.
Through immersive technologies, contemporary art and storytelling, the project presents the timeless values found in Imam Al-Bukhari’s works — particularly Sahih al-Bukhari and Al-Adab al-Mufrad — in a format accessible to modern audiences.
Artists from Uzbekistan, Qatar, the United Kingdom, China and across Asia have created immersive installations inspired by hadiths that highlight universal values.
Imam Al-Bukhari was a scholar, a traveller and a polymath, best known for collecting only sahih — authentic — hadiths. Reflecting on that journey, the exhibition shares Islam as a peaceful, generous and tolerant faith, grounded in universal values and in a scientific approach to knowledge.
The project also introduces its audience to the cultural background of the scholar’s homeland, represented by some of Uzbekistan’s most internationally recognised artists, who are devoted both professionally and spiritually to Islamic art.
As with any artwork that carries a story and a message, these artists tell the story of every Muslim through the narratives of the Prophet Muhammad — each work focusing on one theme: mind, spirit, body, soul, life, or God.
In an increasingly polarized world, cultural misunderstanding and prejudice continue to grow. At the same time, younger generations often lack accessible, engaging and intellectually grounded content about Islamic civilization and its contributions to global culture.
The Bukhari: Islamic Art Exhibition responds to this need by presenting Islamic heritage through innovative storytelling, contemporary art and digital experiences that resonate with modern audiences.
Bukhari Creative Group was founded in 2021 as an international team of researchers and cultural practitioners. The touring exhibition is one strand of a wider body of work.
Exhibitions that set Islamic art alongside the intellectual legacies of Central Asian luminaries. The Bukhari exhibition, and a Mihrab installation drawing on Samarkand cut-tile mosaic contributed to “In Praise of the Artisanal Artist” at the Ithra Gallery in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
Central Asian Islamic heritage through the lens, made accessible to a global audience. Research-based documentaries with the Centre of Islamic Civilisation on Al-Farabi and music theory, Avicenna and medicine, and Al-Biruni’s discoveries, with Al-Khwarizmi and mathematics in development — each combining interviews with scholars, animation built from Bukhara-school miniature painting, and original Central Asian music.
Connecting Central Asian artists with cultural collaborators worldwide. CraftMeetsDesign opens international markets to Uzbek artisans whose livelihoods depended on tourism, creates digital roles for young people, and supports a tourism strategy for craft regions such as the Fergana Valley.
Staged work carrying the artistry and intellectual depth of Central Asian heritage, including music by the Sogdiona orchestra.
Books and editions that shed light on the enduring influence of Central Asian luminaries, including Alisher Navoi’s <em>Ghazals and Ruba’iyat</em>.
Work that bridges research and artistic expression, with universities, research centres and craft bodies — among them the Imam Bukhari International Research Centre, the World Craft Council and the University of Leicester.
