Alisher Navoiy’s “Ghazals And Ruba’iyat”
This is a bilingual edition of 12 ghazals and 12 ruba’iyat, with the originals in Latin script and English translations by Andrew Staniland and Aidakhon Bumatova. The calligraphy also shows the ruba’iyat in their original Arabic script. There is an introduction to Navoiy, the style of his poetry, the translations, the art and book design. There are commentaries on the paintings and the calligraphy, as well as explanatory notes for the poems.
The painter is Davlat Toshev, who is a miniaturist in the Bukharan school of miniature painting, continuing the tradition of the Herat school, which Navoiy was a patron of at its peak. There are 16 paintings, many of which were done specially for this book.
The calligrapher is Islom Mamatov, a master calligrapher with more than 30 years of experience, who is currently working on the exterior decoration of the Centre of Islamic Civilisation in Uzbekistan and the renovation of the memorial complex of Imam Bukhari. His calligraphy shows each ruba’i in the Arabic script in which it was originally written.
The book design, by Genessa Wright and Assiya Tulesheva, draws on the traditions of Timurid book design for a contemporary equivalent of a manuscript book.
The book is a new project by Sevara Ibrokhim and her company Bukhari Creative Group, following the highly successful “Imam Al Bukhari, Islamic Art Exhibition”.
